What is an EDI 214?
EDI 214 (Transportation Carrier Shipment Status Message) is a transportation EDI transaction used by carriers to electronically send shipment status updates to shippers, brokers, 3PLs, or consignees. It communicates the real-time progress of a shipment—such as pickup, departure, in-transit events, delays, arrival, and proof of delivery.
EDI 214 is typically sent after a load has been tendered (EDI 204) and accepted (EDI 990). It provides visibility during shipment execution and ensures all parties know the exact status and location of freight throughout transit.
By replacing manual tracking calls, emails, and spreadsheets, EDI 214 enables automated shipment tracking across the transportation lifecycle.

Step 1 – Load Tender (EDI 204)
The shipper or broker sends shipment details to the carrier.
The carrier accepts the load electronically.
Step 3 – Shipment Execution
Step 4 – Status Updates (EDI 214)
At key milestones (pickup, departure, arrival, delay, delivery), the carrier sends EDI 214 messages with timestamps and location updates.
Step 6 – Payment Processing
This standardized tracking workflow ensures continuous visibility from dispatch to delivery.
Implementing EDI 214 significantly improves transportation visibility, coordination, and performance management.
